R2HOME

Every day, 1300 radiosondes are launched in the world attached under weather balloons to collect atmospheric data. R2HOME is a robot that guides their return on earth to a precise landing point. The equipment is intact and can be reused, enabling the launch and return of a growing number of sondes.

Research partner:

R2HOME‘s mission is to make radiosondes reusable. This will improve short-term weather forecasting as well as long term climate change understanding while reducing the environmental impact of weather balloons used all over the world.

Implementation partner:

MeteoSwiss is the Swiss Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology. They performs the activities set out in the Federal Act on Meteorology and Climatology operating the national surface and radar measurement network, and collecting, managing and analysing weather and climate data. They produce forecasts, and issue information, warnings and advice, and engaged in researching and developing tailor-made products and services.
